Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga

PRENATAL YOGA CLASS FOR MUMS TO BE

Prenatal yoga classes are about spending time tuning into the needs of your body and of your rapidly growing baby. Prenatal yoga classes combine gentle stretching and strengthening, breath awareness, relaxation, meditation and the sharing of knowledge and experience. You will be encouraged to tap into your vast inner resources. Learn to create a conscious connection with your body that facilitates greater clarity, peace and acceptance. We want to give you and your partner the inspiration to give birth as naturally and actively as possible, reducing the need for medical interventions. Practicing prenatal yoga will give you strength and courage to navigate through the incredible changes brought about by motherhood.

POSTNATAL YOGA FOR NEW MUMS

Postnatal yoga uses movement, balance and relaxation to allow your body to heal from pregnancy and birth. In repairing the body and mind and all the tissues, mothers are also able to connect with other mothers. Mums and their babies are incorporated into the practise; using yoga asanas to keep the babies entertained, or holding the babies as part of the yoga itself. Mothers are able to heal and reconnect with their bodies, regain strength, relaxation and confidence in a safe environment.

WHY POSTNATAL YOGA?

Here's what women experience as a result of practicing postnatal yoga:

  • Interaction with other mums; connect with others about the joys and challenges of being a new mother
  • Healing emotionally after a difficult pregnancy or birth
  • Maintains flexibility in the spine and joints
  • Picking up your child can lead to back pain; Postnatal Yoga develops strength in abdominal and back muscles
  • Reduces chance or presence of anxiety or depression
  • Stretch shoulders and back which can become sore due to breastfeeding

Guidelines and Safety
WHEN CAN I START?

If you are new to yoga we recommend waiting until your 13th week before commencing.  If you already have a consistent yoga practice, you are welcome to start the prenatal yoga classes at any time.
Best to start as early in your second trimester as you can.  If you are more than 30 weeks pregnant please call us before starting as we will need to asses your suitability.

DO I NEED PREVIOUS YOGA EXPERIENCE?

You do not need to know anything about yoga or have a certain level of fitness to begin.  All you need is a commitment to attend at least one class a week to reap the benefits

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Just yourself and a water bottle.  Mats and props are supplied, although we do recommend purchasing your own quality mat, available at the studio.

WHEN DO I FINISH??

When you give birth!  The yoga classes are tailored to be safe for you until you give birth.  We have many mums to be still going strong at 42 weeks.
